Kevin Smail, Treatment Supervisor at Abraxas I facilitated AI’s first UNARMED group with five residents from his dorm. Kevin said he was honored to be chosen to be one of AI’s initial trainers as he felt he could facilitate the curriculum properly and with fidelity.

Since its implementation, 53 youth have completed UNARMED. UNARMED groups are offered in four of our residential facilities and we have run two sessions in the community.

As youth are completing this 12-session program, we are putting a strong emphasis on recidivism outcomes at 90 and 180-days post program completion (community based) or program discharge (residential). This data supports continuous curriculum development and helps measure the program’s impact. As we continue to expand our reach into other Abraxas programs and with other partners in the community, we will be holding another Abraxas training session in October. Thank you to all our facilitators for being a part of such an important and impactful initiative.
